In the 2021-2022 school year, K-5 families were surveyed regarding device access. If families did not have one device per student in their household for learning, the district will provide each school age K-5 child with a device for home use during the 21-22 school year.

BDSD 1:1 Chromebook Policy Handbook
Students are responsible for their ethical and educational use of the technology resources of Brown Deer School District. All district policies and handbook expectations apply to the use of Chromebooks. Consequences for inappropriate use are outlined in the Internet Safety and Acceptable Use Policy. Students are responsible for bringing a fully charged Chromebook to school each day for all classes unless advised not to do so by a teacher. Students will use their Google Account Login to access the Internet on the Chromebook. Students’ Google Apps for Education Suite of Tools will be used for work production and saving online work. Chromebooks are the property of Brown Deer School District. Students should handle the device with care. The School Student Handbook and the District Chromebook Website outline the general care of the Chromebook (carry in case, do not eat/drink near Chromebook, do not leave Chromebook unsupervised, etc…).
|
Students are encouraged to use the Chromebook at school and at home. The Brown Deer School District uses a network filtering system as one means of measurement of protection for our students. A comprehensive approach including protection measures, monitoring and instruction is utilized in our school district. The district-issued student Chromebooks will have Internet filtering at school and at home to the extent it is possible with the tools in place within the School District & Google Apps for Education Administration. There may be times when the filtering tools may not work, may fail, or changes beyond the District’s control may occur causing web filtering to not occur on the district-issued devices when they are not within the School District. Parents and students are encouraged to report to their site administrator any complaints or concerns regarding student access or exposure to any content, activities, or communications that may be harmful, deceptive, or otherwise inappropriate or objectionable. It is recommended a student’s use of the Internet be monitored.
We encourage families to have conversations about responsible technology use. We recommend using the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction's New Interactive Safety Resource. We also recommend looking at the Parent Toolkit App for families.
Additional Internet Safety Information can be found here.
The Internet Safety and Acceptable Use Policy 7540.03 applies to the Chromebook and its use. Click this link to read the full policy.

Lessons will be presented to establish and model expectations and educational use of Chromebooks deliberately in grades K-12. In grades K-5 lessons will take place through STEM curriculum in addition to guidance and regular classroom norms and behaviors. In grades 6-8, lessons will take place through STEM curriculum in addition to NEST classrooms and reinforced classroom behaviors. In grades 9-12, orientation will take place in the first few days of school and informational literacy is taught through ELA and Social Studies curriculum.

All Chromebooks are covered by the manufacturer’s warranty for malfunction due to manufacturing or non-performance issues. The warranty does not cover damage that is determined (by the District) to be accidental, intentional, or the result of negligent use or treatment; nor does it cover outright loss or destruction of the Chromebook, power cord, battery, or sleeve.
Chromebooks are assigned to students in a similar fashion as assigning textbooks. However, unlike textbook assignment, Chromebooks will be assigned to the student annually for the entirety of their enrollment in the District. It is understood that as materials are used, normal wear is expected. What is not expected is wear and tear that is above what is considered normal. As with textbooks, students may be issued a fine at the end of the school year if excessive wear is evident.
It is also understood that when using electronic devices, damage may occur. Two types of damage to school property are accidental damage and malicious or negligent damage. If a device is damaged, the student will need to return the device to the school’s designated help desk to generate a repair order and to determine the nature of the damage, accidental or malicious. If device damage is determined to be accidental, the student may be able to check out a loaner while the device is being repaired. The student may be charged for repeated repair. If a device is damaged through malice or negligence, the student will be responsible for all repair costs. Below are the charges for the replacement costs for the 2021-2022 school year.
