Dr. Monica Kelsey-Brown Named District Administrator of the
Brown Deer School District
Media Release: March 13, 2020
The Brown Deer School Board has unanimously selected Dr. Monica Kelsey-Brown as the new District Administrator of the Brown Deer School District effective July 1, 2020. Dr. Kelsey-Brown has served as Director of Teaching and Learning for the last five years. She was also appointed as Assistant District Administrator in 2018.
She will replace Dr. Deb Kerr, who has proudly led the school district for the last 13 years and is retiring in June.
The search began last fall by gathering numerous focus groups and offering a community survey to identify the essential characteristics of the next district administrator. The profile developed was utilized in a proactive recruitment process in which the school board interviewed numerous candidates. Three finalists were selected that visited the district to interact with staff and students, as well as present themselves to the community.
School Board President Kevin Klimek stated that the board was pleased to confirm through this process that the strongest candidate was already in the district. “With a great foundation already established, we are excited to continue this work with Dr. Kelsey-Brown as we write the next chapter of the Brown Deer story.” He noted that the process also produced an invaluable outside assessment of the district’s strengths and challenges. “Together, Dr. Kelsey-Brown and the board will use this data as we strive to provide a world-class education for all of our students.”
Dr. Kelsey-Brown has two degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, and a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her objective in leading the Brown Deer School District is to “foster innovative, high-quality learning experiences for all students in a climate that is conducive for everyone to thrive.” As Director of Teaching and Learning, her influence over the past five years has been instrumental in strengthening the district’s curriculum and working to close achievement gaps. Dr. Kelsey-Brown is excited about the opportunity to continue Dr. Kerr’s legacy. She will work to support, empower, and encourage all stakeholders to collaborate as we transition into a new chapter of “EXCELLENCE and EQUITY” for the Brown Deer School District.
