School nursing is a specialized practice of professional nursing that advances the well-being, academic success and life-long achievement and health of students. To that end, school nurses facilitate positive student responses to normal development; promote health and safety including a healthy environment; intervene with actual and potential health problems; provide case management services; and actively collaborate with others to build student and family capacity for adaptation, self-management, self advocacy, and learning (NASN, 2010)

The school nurse has a crucial role in the seamless provision of comprehensive health services to children and youth. Increasing numbers of students enter schools with chronic health conditions that require management during the school day. The role of the school nurse serves as a health care team member in providing preventive services, early identification of problems, interventions, and referrals to foster health and educational success.

The Health Room Assistant functions as a part of the school's health team to provide basic first aid and medication administration under the leadership and direction of the School Nurse.

Coronavirus (COVID-19) Commonly Asked Questions

What is Coronavirus (COVID-19)?

+
-

COVID-19, the 2019 novel coronavirus, a strain of coronavirus, was first reported in Wuhan, China in late 2019. The virus, also referred to as SARS-CoV-2 (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2), has since spread globally.  Much is still being learned about the disease, including:

  1. How long it takes to begin to show symptoms after being exposed to the virus
  2. How severe the symptoms of illness will be in an individual with coronavirus
  3. Exactly how the disease can be spread

How is the Coronavirus spread?

+
-

COVID-19 appears to be spread primarily through droplets from the throat and nose. This means that people with COVID-19 can spread it to others when they cough or sneeze. The droplets may also be on objects or surfaces, so if an individual comes into contact with those objects and touches their mouth or eyes, the virus can spread.

What are the signs and symptoms of the Coronavirus (COVID-19)?

+
-

Most common symptoms:

  1. Fever
  2. Coughing
  3. Fatigue and/or body aches

Some individuals can also show these symptoms:

  1. Shortness of breath
  2. Headache
  3. Sore throat
  4. Abdominal pain
  5. Diarrhea

Who is at risk?

+
-

At this time, there have only been a few cases of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) in the U.S.  Unless your family or child has recently traveled to China, Japan, South Korea, Italy or Iran, or you have been exposed to someone currently being treated for COVID-19, your risk is very low. Current studies have shown that older adults and individuals with chronic health conditions are at higher risk of being impacted by the illness.

The majority of patients with COVID-19 outside of Wuhan, China currently appear to have a mild illness.
