Academic and Career Planning at BDE
Academic and Career Planning (ACP) is a process primarily used at the middle/high school level, but the School District of Brown Deer sees the value in starting this work early. ACP's primary focus is to help students identify their personal, academic, social, and career goals and develop plans to achieve them. However, elementary school also plays a significant role in shaping a student's academic path. During these formative years, students learn a lot about themselves. Our school is committed to providing the necessary guidance to students to help them:
-
Discover their unique learning style
-
Determine their likes and dislikes
-
Build confidence in their abilities
-
Develop self-management and advocacy skills
-
Learn to set goals and make plans to achieve them.
Our goal is for every student in the School District of Brown Deer to graduate with the skills and knowledge necessary to confidently navigate both higher education and the workforce, allowing for a seamless transition into post-high school life. This is a gradual process that unfolds over the years, with each student's unique development at the forefront of our approach. Student goals and plans are expected to change annually based on each student’s personal experiences.
How can parents get involved with ACP?
- Discuss how your child is performing on standardized tests (Grades 3-5), district assessments, and in all of their classes.
- Attend Parent-Teacher Conferences.
- Utilize ClassDojo as a communication tool with teachers and staff.
- Have discussions with your child about their strengths and interests and how they connect to different classes and careers. Also, when you notice a strength or interest let them know, as it will help them develop greater self-awareness of their strengths and interests.
- Be aware of 5th-grade transition events and programming for the Middle School and explore the course description information together for choosing elective courses for 6th grade. (5th Grade)
- Share your career journey and what aspects you enjoy the most about your career. (Grades 3-5)
Who Should You Contact With Questions?
Your first point of contact is always your student’s teacher. If you have additional questions, you can also talk to your student's counselor or building administrators.
